I chose to watch a tutorial on excel because I have no clue how to use the software and I get it for free on my computer. I also choose to watch excel because my teacher in my bio lab has my group use it a lot and I usually sit there and do nothing because I don't know how, and also because I saw that soon we are having a skill check for excel. It would be great to have some kind of clue how to use it. There's way toooooo much you can do with excel, and I can already tell it will not be one of my favorites. But the easiest things I found that you can do in excel are that you can wrap the text, so that all your text will fit in the excel cells. I learned that excel is set up so that if your computer dies or crashes while using excel you are able to recover the data. To make your sheet more pretty, you can rotate the cells in your excel sheet by clicking the home ribbon. excel even lets you encrypt workbook with password, which basically protects your data in excel, so unauthorized people can't access it. Excel has A LOT going on, and if your good at using it, ....KUDOS to you! But learning a little more about excel was cool and i'm glad I found a video that I could use to help me prepare for my excel skill check coming soon.

These are just a couple of slides from the tutorial , file recovery and text wrapping.
if you would like to check out this tutorial and see all the other things you can do on excel, since lynda is a available to us FSU students, sign up and watch the video .
Good forward thinking. I didn't learn Excel until I was in my undergrad "Intro to Ed Tech" class, just like you. Now, I can't live without Excel. We are only going to scratch the surface in this class. I challenge you to just use it. It is the easiest way to keep information in a table. Not numerical data - just information. I think the first thing I did was keep my financial info in a spreadsheet. Contact phone numbers/websites/passwords, balances/credit limits, due dates, account numbers. Quickbooks could do this but I like the control and simplicity of Excel. From there, you will feel comfortable, then try it for something else.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try to use excel to keep track of my finances. I think after I get better at using excel this will be easier then keeping track on a sheet of paper that I'll easily misplace. So far I have only used excel in my Biology lab to keep track of the data in our experiments.
DeleteIt was a smart choice to learn about excel since we will be having a skill check. It puts you a little bit ahead. Do you see yourself using Excel in your future now that you know more about it? I've always wondered if it's something I really need to be an expert in.
ReplyDeleteI don't really see myself using excel that much in the future, but you never know. Right now i'm still shaky on it, but going ahead and learning about it, I think will be helpful for the skill check.
DeleteExcel is pretty tough to navigate, and I first started using excel my first semester in college for a chemistry lab and I completely dreaded it because I did not know how to work excel at all. I think that it is awesome that you took this class assignment and turned it into an opportunity to be educated on a tool that you have struggled with, so great job on that! My questions for you is, what is the feature on excel that is most helpful to you? And what feature on excel would you most likely use as a teacher? Here is a link to a book on Excel 2017: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_6?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=excel+for+dummies+2017&sprefix=excel+%2Caps%2C142&crid=4A552BW0PYJW.
ReplyDeleteI've never used excel before. I am nervous about the skill check. Thanks for the link on quick tips
ReplyDeleteI'm very nervous! I think these excel tips will be helpful though when studying for the skill check
